They Probably Shouldn't Work On That

I have heard comments from many over the years to the tune of:
They probably shouldn’t be working on X… if they lack this understanding.
I’ve heard this comment made for just about every aspect of our industry.
There are limitations to what is safe or appropriate for someone to do.
The reality is 2 fold for me.
1. Techs are put in positions to figure it out to do their job every day.
Right or wrong, they are trying to do their job. Whatever that job asks.
To lose sight of this is ignorant as the solution is not always to find another job.
2. We all had to start somewhere and work on things we lacked proper understanding of.
It was what we wanted to do though and opportunity didn’t come easy.
So we stepped out there prepared or not to take our shot.
It is easy to lose sight of this as we mature in our craft.
It also doesn’t help we were treated that way by our seniors so to some degree it is passing the buck.
I don’t agree that this helps our industry move forward.
We lack techs and we want to complain our company asks too much of us.
But then we talk like this to junior techs who are already struggling with feeling unqualified and inadequate.
It is in our best interest to help build more than we teardown.
This may feel like an insignificant comment but it rattles a young techs mind.
Need to be tough or not is not the point when we need more people.
Rant over, MTT
