What is Chiller Load? Chiller Tech Perspective

High load vs Low load on a chiller.

What do I really mean?

I look at this from a TD perspective.

In its simplest form. If my evaporator temp difference is less than 5F from setpoint then I see this as a low load.

If this difference is more than 8F from setpoint then I see this as a high load.

Now before they get their pitchforks...

I am looking at this from a perspective of a 10F design TD.

While a lot of chillers are 10F design they actually range from 8F to 12F.

Even that is still a generalization because they can get even beyond those.

Do you see how this can get complicated?

My point, my scale will adjust based on the design TD. So take my 10F design example and adjust from there as needed.

Now you can make this more complex by throwing in lift management via condenser water temp.

But maybe another day.

When I am evaluating system performance and I say terms like high or low load. This is how I am determining that.
