DX vs Flooded Chiller Evaporators

Something that gets very confusing with chiller evaporators is identifying the difference between DX, Flooded, and Hybrids.

The first thing to look for is where does the water pipe in.

If the water connects on the shell side of the barrel, also meaning the refrigerant is connecting on the end of the barrel, then you've identified a DX.

These evaps flow water on the outside of the tubes (shell side) and refrigerant in the tubes.

If the water connects to the end of the barrel and the refrigerant piping is connecting to the shell. You have either a Flooded or Hybrid.

These evaps flow water through the tubes and refrigerant on the shell side.

Now there is still a dilemma of identifying a Flooded from a Hybrid.

If the liquid line/metering device pipes into the bottom of the barrel, then its a Flooded.

If the liquid line/metering device pipes into the top of the barrel, then its a Hybrid.
